Second, if the job can't wait, verify stock with your own eyes. Systems are helpful until they're wrong. We now do a physical count before promising same-day availability on any rush order. That policy came directly from this job.

Third, and this applies to vendors as much as buyers: know what you don't know. When I told Mike that diesel air compressors and Bluebeam tool chests weren't my specialty, I wasn't losing a sale. I was protecting his timeline. The supplier who says "this isn't my strength—here's who does it better" earns the next call.

In my experience, that's what separates a parts order from a partnership. Mike still calls me first. And now he knows that if he asks me a question I can't answer, I'll say so. That's the kind of trust you can't put in a stock bin.
