But what people usually mean by the question is: which one should I buy? The answer depends on the collation angle and nail diameter, not just the gun body. A framing nailer fires .113- to .131-inch diameter nails, and the 21-degree paper-tape collation is near-universal. The 15-gauge angled finish nailer is the trim specialist's second gun, but the 16-gauge straight is the generalist's tool.

The fastener connection: I've watched contractors save "30%" on no-name collated nails and lose three hours to jams and misfires because the collation was weak or the wire welding was inconsistent.   • You can physically verify quality — no burrs, consistent dimensions, uniform finish
  • You're buying enough volume to justify sampling and inspection

I do not mean generic hardware is always the wrong call. I mean you need to know what you're buying — and that means comparing more than the price tag. The value of a known brand isn't the fastener itself; it's the certainty. Knowing the grade and dimensions will be consistent on every reorder is worth more than the 5-12% savings from a cheaper distributor.

Total cost of ownership includes the base price, the rework when it fails, the expedited order when you run out, and the customer relationship when something comes loose. The lowest quoted price is rarely the lowest total cost.

There's something satisfying about a fastener order that just works — no backorders, no substitutions, no "should be good enough." After 14 documented mistakes, I'll pay for that satisfaction.
